KUALA LUMPUR: PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamarudin has suggested for songs to be filtered the same way movies are screened in the country.
She was responding to question by the media as to whether the women in Pakatan Harapan agreed with the call by the Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) women wing yesterday to ban hit song ‘Despacito’ over its sexually explicit content.
"Songs should be screened just like movies. This will ensure all songs aired do not carry improper meanings," she said during the Pakatan Harapan women's wing press conference at the DAP headquarters here today.
PAN Wanita chief Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said the reason the wing came up with the statement yesterday was not to completely ban all songs in the country, but for the authorities to filter songs with inappropriate lyrics.
"If it's aired in a private sphere, that's fine. What I'm talking about is when the song is aired publicly. Children will then be listening to these types of songs.
"I'm a mother and I'm sure other mothers in this country would not want their children to be exposed to such things at early age," she said.
Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) has said it will cease broadcasting the global hit song ‘Despacito’ at all its radio and television stations immediately.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said RTM’s evaluation panel has decided to withdraw the approval for playing the song after a re-evaluation.
