MARANG: Five family members in Kampung Rhu Muda were left homeless when their bungalow was destroyed in a fire yesterday.
Marang fire and rescue station chief Hassan Embong said a distress call was received around 3am and three engines with 14 firemen from Marang and Wakaf Tapai stations rushed to the scene.
He said the house and a shoplot had almost been razed to the ground when the team arrived but no casualties was reported.
"A shoplot near the house was also on fire but our men managed to control it from spreading to 10 other houses nearby. The flames were completely extinguished at 3.30am," he said adding that the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
The house owner Najwa Izzati Sidek said she received a call about the fire from a neighbour as her family members were spending the night at her parent's house in Kampung Paya Resak, here.
"We estimated the losses to be about RM300,000," she said, adding that her family had been staying at the house for nine years.
