KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two construction workers including a 40-year-old woman were crushed to death by a crane which collapsed at a construction site in Taman Capital, Tanjung Tuang, near here yesterday.
The victims identified as Muhammad Bake, 49, and his colleague, Helen Suma Gilbert, succumbed to severe head and bodily injuries. They died on the spot in the 3.35pm accident.
It was learnt that the victims and their colleagues were busy working at the construction site for a housing project when the crane collapsed.
The incident happened so fast that they could not do anything when they saw the arm of the crane crushing Muhammad.
The workers only realised Helen was also pinned down by the frane when they extricated Muhammad’s body.
State Fire and Rescue Department acting deputy director Tiong Ling Hii said nine men in two engines were rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 3.50pm.
“Muhammad’s body was extricated when the rescue team arrived at the scene about 4pm. We had to use two excavators to lift the boom of the crane to extricate Helen’s body,” he said.
He added that the case had been handed over to the police for investigation.
