Indonesian woman dies in Papar van incident

PAPAR: An Indonesian woman, who was rescued when the car she was in was swept up by fast-moving waters at Kampung Lingan Lama here yesterday, has died.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Ladamah Sulaiman said the 34-year-old woman, attached to an NGO, was with nine Japanese tourists in a van during the 5pm incident.

"She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11pm, due to lung injuries.

The victim's van was swept away by a rush of water from upstream.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the 26-year-old van driver.

The other nine passengers, aged between 18 and 22, were discharged after received outpatient treatment at the hospital.
