Two feared drowned, one survive in fishing accident

BATU PAHAT: Two men are feared drowned while another survived after the boat they were in, sank while fishing at the Bekok Dam in Yong Peng here early this morning.

Batu Pahat police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Wahib Musa said the three friends from Segamat - R. Kaalicharan Sam, 28, A. Tamil Selvam, 19, C. Dava Rajan, 16 - had arrived at the dam at about 10pm on Saturday night.

The victims were setting up a net when their boat was suddenly hit by a strong wave around 1am, throwing the three into the waters .

Only Dava Rajan managed to swim ashore.

“We received an emergency call at about 3.15 am and when our personnel arrived at the dam, we found the survivor Dava Rajan, who told us of what had happened.

“One managed to swim to the shore while the fate of the other two are unknown at the moment,” Wahib said.

The fibre glass boat belonged Kaalicharan Sam, who also owned a license to fish at the dam.

“Search and rescue operation are still on-going. Fire and Rescue Department personnel have been at the scene since 9am this morning,” Wahib said.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a 12 firemen from the Yong Peng and Labis fire stations and eight members of the scuba unit from Kluang are involved in the operation.
