Occupancy certificate a must for new Keramat tahfiz school

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Darul Quran Iftifaqiyyah tahfiz school will only operate after receiving an occupancy certificate from the Fire and Rescue Department.

Following Thursday’s deadly fire that engulfed the school’s temporary building, the fire department will inspect the new building to ensure it complies with fire safety regulations.

The school’s principal, Muhammad Zahid Mahmod, said students will not reside in the building until the school receives a green light from the fire department.

“The new building meets the fire safety requirements but we want to be extra sure that it is safe for the students,” the principal told the New Straits Times here, today.

“The fire department will ensure that the new building does not pose a fire hazard, unlike the old one which caught fire.”

Zahid said a total of 24 closed-circuit television cameras, as well as fire extinguishers, will be placed at various parts of the school.

He said the school is also looking to hire two security guards to prevent people from breaking and entering.

“We are still looking for suitable candidates, but we will hire them through legal agents recognised by the government.

“This is to ensure that the security guards are well-trained and will do their jobs well.”

Zahid added that the school’s students and teachers will receive fire safety training from the fire department.

“The fire department is in the midst of researching a suitable module for the school.”

He also said the school has so far received RM1 million in donations.

He added that the money will be used to improve the school’s safety features, as well as aid the students who were involved in the fiery tragedy.

He also said students, especially those from poor families, could enrol in the school for free.

“However, we don’t take foreign students or anyone below the age of 12, except under exceptional circumstances.”
