BESUT: A fire broke out at the Kota Putra Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) here last night, engulfing four dormitory rooms.

All occupants managed to evacuate the building safely and no injuries or casualties were reported.

Besut fire and rescue station chief Muhammad Azrul Izzham Zulkifli said the fire involved four rooms on the first floor of the dormitory.

He said the building housed 58 male students, who were in the school area at the time of the incident.

"We received an emergency call at 10.44pm, and 20 personnel, along with two fire engines from the Besut and Jertih fire and rescue stations, were dispatched to the scene," he said.

"The school contacted the fire department as the flames intensified, despite attempts by students and dormitory staff to put out the fire," he added.

Azrul said it took about an hour and 40 minutes to control and extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters had to break through the building's ceiling to ensure the flames were completely put out, particularly in the roof area," he said.

The cause of the fire and the total losses incurred are still under investigation, he said.
