BALING: Netizens are singing praises of workers at a solid waste management company for their noble act of returning some RM2,000 in cash, which they found in a garbage bag, to its rightful owner in Kupang here.
Their act of honesty has caught the attention of Netizens when pictures of the nine workers of Environmental Idaman Sdn Bhd (E-Idaman) were uploaded on social media.
Baling E-Idaman Unit chief Shazwan Shahbudin said the workers were tasked to carry out cleaning works at a house belonging to an elderly woman who lives alone in Taman Seri Mawar, Kupang yesterday.
Shazwan said one of the woman's children who live in Kuala Lumpur had contacted the company, seeking help to clear garbage bags and recycle materials at the house compound.
"We understood that the woman, in her 60s, has a habit of collecting discarded and recycled items from the town and bringing them home.
"Her son was concerned that the pile of garbage would do harm to her health and safety, so he decided to contact us for help to clean-up the house," he said, when contacted.
Shazwan said as the workers were loading the garbage into the lorry, the woman suddenly complained that her money, kept in a plastic bag was missing.
"The workers immediately inspected the pile of garbage but did not find the money," he said.
Upon returning to the garbage collection centre in Pulai, the workers felt that they were compelled to help the woman and decided to check each of the garbage bags.
"After much tedious labour, they finally found the cash in a plastic bag covered with mud.
"They counted the cash, which totalled to RM2,379.80, and subsequently returned the money to the woman yesterday evening," he said.
Shazwan said he is extremely proud of the workers for their honesty.
