Anwar Ibrahim in car accident, escapes unhurt

KUALA LUMPUR: Jailed former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim escaped unharmed after being involved in a minor road accident at Saujana Utama, Sungai Buloh just after midday today.

His lawyer, Sivarasa Rasiah, said the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader did not suffer any serious physical injuries in the accident, which took place at a traffic light junction at about 12.30pm.

Anwar was being transported back to Sungai Buloh prison when the car he was in braked sharply to avoid an oncoming car.

“The escort car behind knocked into the car carrying Anwar. Fortunately, he did not suffer any serious physical injuries but was shaken up,” said Sivarasa in a statement today.

He said Anwar took pain killers after being examined by a doctor at Sungai Buloh prison.

The former Permatang Pauh member of parliament was due to be taken back to prison after being hospitalised at Hospital Kuala Lumpur for four days following irregular blood pressure readings.

Sivarasa said Health Ministry deputy director-general Datuk Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai examined Anwar at 5pm to decide whether he required further treatment at a hospital.

It is learned that the car carrying Anwar suffered damage to its rear.

In May 2014, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, survived a head-on collision with another vehicle in a minor road accident that left the former with a fractured arm.
