Online voter registration invalid - EC

PUTRAJAYA: Online voter registration or through social media application is not authorised and invalid, said Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.

He said lately some parties had spread news that voter registration could purportedly be done online or through social media application by simply sending their Mykad identity card photo to a certain telephone number and they would be registred immediately as voters.

“The EC wants to stress that the method is not authorised and invalid,” he said in a statement here today.

Mohd Hashim said the registration method in use required the individual to be present at the EC registration counter or any computerised post office counter or through the election assistant registrar (PPP) appointed by EC.

He said they needed to bring along the original Mykad, fill out the Form A and sign the form.

“After registering as a voter, the applicant should receive a copy of the Form A for reference if his application is not received or processed by EC,” he said.

He said the public were advised to be alert and not deceived by the messages being made viral because their personal information would be misused for other purposes by the parties concerned.

The PPPs being appointed were also reminded not to engage in such registration that violated the Elections (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002 as EC would not hesitate to terminate their appointment immediately.

Mohd Hashim advised those who had yet to register as voters to take the opportunity to do without waiting at the last minute or due to certain information that went viral on social media.

“Registering as voters and voting during elections is the responsibility of every citizen,” he added. - Bernama
