ALOR STAR: The Kedah state government has denied any involvement in a Job Fair being held at a hotel here which has shocked jobseekers by charging multiple fees.
There are also claims that participating companies are not using the event to recruit, but to promote their products.
State Science, Innovation and Information Communications Technology Committee chairman Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor said the event was organised by a private company, and that the state was not aware that jobseekers were made to pay multiple fees.
“I heard complaints from those who attended the fair regarding (fees) that they needed to pay. We regret (that this) happened, and hope the organiser will be more sensitive over the matter,” she said in a statement.
However, Norsabrina said she has yet to receive an official report on the event.
Several jobseekers have taken to Facebook to voice their disappointment over the event.
Aizat Abdullah said attendees have to pay RM10 for each job application form and another RM50 to join a seminar on how to prepare a resume and how to attend an interview.
He also claimed that most of the participating companies were there not to recruit, but to sell their products.
Aimi Shahira claimed that those who conducted interviews at the fair were staff from the company that organised the event, and not representatives from companies which were hiring.
She also wrote that some jobseekers came from as far as Penang, as the organiser had advertised the event across the northern region.
It is learnt that the fair, which began yesterday and ends today, is organised by a Selangor-based company.
