PUTRAJAYA: The government is formulating new mission for Malaysia that will reflect the people's aspiration in line with the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) vision.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this in his opening remark before chairing an economic roundtable with representatives from non-governmental organisations, social enterprises and government agencies dealing with social welfare.
"The whole idea is for us to get your ideas and feedack so that we can together decide on what are some of our aspirational goals," he said.
Najib stressed on the aspect of how one could achieve these goals.
"How do we get there? The journey towards 2050 which I want to explain is not about what will happen in 2050, but what we can do today that will shape Malaysia in 2050.
"Some elements of these aspirations relating to TN50, I will include in the upcoming 2018 Budget," he said.
The prime minister said changes that had to be done to shape Malaysia according to aspirations could take awhile.
"If need be, we may have to embark on long-term programmes.
"It is just like a big tanker ship that will need quite a distance to make a turn before reaching the port.
"You cannot simply turn the tanker ship upon reaching the port. It doesn't work that way," said Najib.
Najib added some developments would involve generational changes, citing improvements to the education system would take longer period of at least 15 to 20 years to see results.
"If you don't start today, obviously we will not see the results in 15 and 20 years," he said.
TN50 is the nation's 30-year transformation plan after Vision 2020, aiming to transform Malaysia into a nation of calibre, with a new mindset.
