KOTA BARU: The apology made by Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak for 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal does not mean that he is guilty.
Kelantan Umno information chief Datuk Zawawi Othman said he believed the former prime minister feels that he was responsible to what had happened to 1MDB.
He said the financial scandal also occured during Najib's tenure as finance minister.
"Kelantan Umno feel that his ( Najib's) apology does not mean he is guilty, but more about negligence that may have happened when he was finance minister.
"I use the word 'may' as I believe the negligence happened without him realising it.
"Najib had asked that he is judged fairly. He does not want people to be influenced by sentiments of hatred and so on. This shows how pure and sincere the former prime minister is," said Zawawi.
Najib had issued an apology for all that transpired during the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal.
Despite his apology, the former prime minister asserted his innocence, claiming he was deceived by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho and his associates.
This was in the statement read out by his eldest son Datuk Mohamad Nizar yesterday.
The High Court is expected to deliver its verdict at the conclusion of the prosecution's case next week.
