BATU PAHAT: A total of 4,272 graduates will receive their scrolls during the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) 17th convocation ceremony which starts on October 14.
Vice chancellor Professor Dr Wahid Razzaly said of the total, 81 would receive their doctorates, masters' degree (341), bachelors' degree (3,260) and diploma (590).
"During the ceremony, we will also present a number of awards to students who have excelled in their studies, including the Royal Award, Chancellor's Award, Sultan Ibrahim Award and Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Aishah Ghani Award.
"We will also present an honorary doctorate in electrical engineering to Dr Mazlan Abbas, an expert in the field of Internet of Things (IoT), in recognition of his contribution to the field of higher education, industry, community and leadership in technology and innovation," said Wahid.
Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, who is UTHM chancellor, will conduct the first session of the convocation ceremony at 9 am on October 14, while Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, who is UTHM Pro Chancellor II, will conduct the second session that afternoon.
Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the university's Pro Chancellor I, will conduct the third session of the ceremony on October 15.
"With this ceremony, the number of UTHM alumni increases to 34,973," said Wahid.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the university's Town and Gown procession on Saturday night. Also present were state Health, Environment, Education and Information Executive Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat, Batu Pahat district officer Ab Han Ramin (correct) and Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation (TLJCF) board of director member Datuk Dr Mohd Khairi Yakub,
A total of 26 contingents, consisting of 1,000 participants comprising of the university's students and staff, took part in the annual procession, which was held for the ninth time.
The Town and Gown procession, which is also the tradition of several top universities like Princeton University, Charles Stuart University and St Andrews University, is organised as a way to announce UTHM's upcoming Convocation Ceremony.
Various activities were held as part of the procession, including the 'Charity Fun Run' which was held in collaboration with TLJCF. A total of RM14,500 was collected from various activities for the foundation, higher than the initial target of RM10,000.
During the event, Ayub also unveiled the logo for UTHM’s 25th Anniversary celebration which will be celebrated on September 16 next year.
