Local probe into 1MDB long ended; not relevant for debate in Parliament - Deputy PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Issues on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) are irrelevant to be debated as local investigations into its case have ended, the Parliament heard today.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said only disgruntled politicians were still keen on harping on the alleged misappropration of funds in 1MDB.

He said investigations by local authorities into 1MDB had long ended but some politicians refused to accept the findings.

"We are certain that the 1MDB case is no longer relevant to be brought up again except by disgruntled politicians," he said.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) who asked the police to state if Malaysia had sought help from Interpol to locate Low Taek Jho, who was alleged to be an integral personality in 1MDB case, to assist in the 1MDB investigation.

Zahid said the government had in fact requested assistance from Interpol on the matter.

He said the police had not received any detailed information from Interpol.

"Nevertheless, we believe that efforts by several parties at international-level, especially by intelligence agencies, have already been finalised," said Zahid.

In August last year, Bank Negara Malaysia completed all investigations into 1MDB and closed the case.

A probe by United States’ Justice Department’s (DoJ) into the 1MDB had also been dismissed in June by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali as politically motivated.

He had said DoJ did not request for any statement or official information from the Attorney-General’s office on the allegations it made against 1MDB, and no charges had been brought against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was the chairman of 1MDB’s advisory board until last year.
