World Bank's report ranking, acknowledgment of Malaysia's electricity reliability

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s ranking in ‘Getting Electricity’ aspect of the World Bank’s Doing Business Report 2018 is an acknowledgement of the reliability of the country’s electricity supply and the transparency of tariff-setting mechanism.

“Malaysia is ranked eighth out of 190 countries,” Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, said in a statement today.

The report, released on Tuesday, said the duration of electricity supply in Malaysia took 31 days compared to 78 in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) high-income nations.

“It is also in recognition of the affordable costs of obtaining electricity connection and the clear and streamlined process in obtaining electricity connection,” Ongkili said.

The ranking, he said, was achieved via the efforts and close cooperation of the electricity supply industry players, Energy Commission and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), to enhance efficiency to facilitate electricity connection.

Ongkili said the collaboration has enabled TNB to implement initiatives like online supply application to provide convenience to the customers and cut customer’s waiting time by simplifying the application process.

“The initiatives are in line with the government’s policy to provide affordable, accessible and sustainable electricity for the public,” he said. - Bernama
