Parents welcome new format on PSAR/UPSR

SHAH ALAM: The new format on Primary School Assessment Report (PSAR) for Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) students is a step in the right directionas it moves away from an exam-oriented system.

Parents welcomed the Education Ministry’s decision not to highlight the names of best schools or states with the most straight As pupils.

Mother of a Year 6 pupil, Norhidayu Abdul Ghani, 47, described the PSAR implementation as a good move.

“They are still children and their emotions can be easily disturbed. Besides, (in an exam-oriented system) they often compare themselves with their peers over the exam results.

“Academic achievement is important, so is co-curricular elements. If we measure (students’ capablities) solely on written exams, we will only be looking at their academic achievements,” she said when met at the SK Raja Muda (Integrasi) here today.

Norhidayu said it was her responsibility as a mother to support and encourage her children to continue doing well instead of scolding them for not excelling in their exams.

She said if the child had done his best, parents should accept whatever his exam results.

“Always encourage and motivate them because this is not the end. There is a lot more for them (children) to see, learn and experience,” she added.

It is learnt that SK Raja Muda (Integrasi) did not make any announcement of students who scored excellent results, but only gave out result slips to all 219 UPSR candidates.
