KUALA LUMPUR: The public can expect more roadblocks and speed traps along the highways soon as the festive season draws closer.
The Land Public Transport Commission, Road Transport Department, National Anti-Drug Agency as well as highway concessionaires will be conducting a series of joint enforcement operations from today (Nov 23 - 26) and as well as next month (Dec 22 - Jan 2, 2018).
SPAD, in a statement today, said there will be an increase in the number of patrols, road blocks and other enforcement activities.
"The activities will see drivers and vehicle operators checked, vehicle GPS records audited, implementation of speed traps and greater patrols at high-risk areas," said the commission.
SPAD said personnel will also patrol locations in the city centre including shopping malls and bus terminals to monitor and take action against touts.
The commission said it recently met with bus operators to remind them to abide by the traffic rules and prioritise passenger safety.
“The commission will not hesitate to take action against negligent operators and drivers. Depending on the severity of the offence, the bus company’s operating licence may be suspended or revoked.
“In extreme cases, the company’s entire fleet may temporarily be suspended, pending a safety audit. If found guilty, legal or administrative action may be taken against the company,” said SPAD.
Members of the public are advised to report any mishap or wrongdoing by bus operators to SPAD through its 24-hour hotline number 1800-88-7723 or email aduan@spad.gov.my. The commission can also be reached via Twitter @aduanSPAD.
Passengers are also encouraged to download the MeterOn mobile app to check if the bus company has any records of traffic violations, including speeding.
