KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 61,057 traffic summonses issued in Malaysia since 2014 have yet to be settled, with 37,506 of them issued to Singaporeans.
However, since the implementation of Op Saman Tertunggak Warganegara Asing (OSTWA), foreigners are more prompt in paying their outstanding summonses and complying with Malaysian traffic laws.
“Their attitude has changed and they are starting to obey traffic rules. They are also quick to pay their outstanding summonses.
"We have seen changes in foreign drivers’ attitudes – (and it is probably due to OSTWA),” said Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director and senior assistant commissioner Sharul Othman Mansur.
"Various payment modes have been made available to help the public pay their summonses. But their attitude of delaying payment has got to change.
"They can check their summons details and pay online or at all traffic branches. For example in Singapore, there are 900 kiosks available to pay summonses," Sharul said at a press conference during the eighth OSTWA operation at Pandan's R & R Area in Johor Baru.
Sharul added that the number one offence committed by foreign motorists is driving beyond the speed limit.
It was revealed that from 2014 to this weekend, 81,708 summonses were recorded involving foreigners, with 50,616 summonses issued to Singaporeans over various traffic offences.
Out of the total, 20,651 summonses have been paid, including 13,110 involving Singaporeans.
