Chance encounter: Hornbills discovered in Tanjung Manis factory toilet; photos go viral

SIBU: Pictures of a pair of hornbill, which was found wandering around in a toilet at a premise in Tanjung Manis, Mukah has gone viral on various social media platforms.

According to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the oriental pied hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris) were found inside the washroom of a furniture production factory on Thursday.

SFC said one of the factory workers, identified as Musni Jemawi stumbled upon the hornbills in the toilet.

Musni later handed over the birds to SFC chief executive officer Wong Ting Chung at the corporation’s office on the same day.

“We are in the process of transporting the hornbills to the Matang Wildlife Centre in Kuching,” he said the statement.

The hornbill is a totally protected species under the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998.

Section 29 of the Ordinance provides a maximum fine of RM25,000 and two years’ imprisonment for those convicted of keeping hornbills as pets, as well as killing, hunting, capturing, selling, trading or disturbing the bird, or possessing any recognisable hornbill parts.
