Azmin Ali steers clear of nephew's graft probe

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali has refused to be drawn into the ongoing investigation involving his nephew, who is suspected of involvement in illegal sand and gravel mining activities in the state.

Azmin said he was in the dark about his nephew’s alleged illegal activities, which led to the latter’s arrest by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Thursday.

“I don't know. How do you know? Do you know (what your) nieces and nephews (do?) This is politically motivated. Let the (investigation) process continue.

“I just want to do my work with integrity and professionally. As long as our decision is transparent and open, (we have) nothing to worry about. That is our policy,” Azmin told reporters.

Azmin said this when met at Stadium Malawati, where he launched the Selangor Entrepreneurs Convention and Awards ceremony.

Azmin also repeated his claim that MACC’s probe was politically motivated, despite the denial issued by MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad yesterday.

Azmin's nephew and three others, aged between 34 and 67, are under arrest after the magistrate's court in Putrajaya granted a seven-day remand order on Nov 30.

Following the arrests, the MACC also froze RM4 million in several bank accounts belonging to a mining company, which has operated since 2014.

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, said the MACC must substantiate its claim that the sand mining company had bribed the Kajang Municipal Council to “close an eye” on the illegal activities.

“They have to prove it. We have been very transparent in the process since 2008. You can see from the state revenue, it has increased tremendously prior to 2008.

“That is a clear evidence that the whole process is so transparent and we can even increase the revenue for the state. I can provide you with all the facts.”
