Sungai Golok begins to recede as fair weather holds

KOTA BARU: The mighty Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang finally began to recede today, 10 days after breaching its danger level and contributing to massive floods in the state.

As of 7pm, the river was measured at 8.97 metres, which is 0.3 metres below its danger level, but still 0.97 metres above its warning mark, the state government’s flood portal reported.

The decline is thanks largely to fair weather experienced in the area over the last 24 hours.

"If the (river continues to recede), the floods will (probably abate by) tomorrow," a state government spokesman said.

The number of evacuees has also dropped sharply to 573 people as of 7pm.

"They are taking shelter at four relief centres in two districts.

"516 of them are in Pasir Mas, while 57 are in Tumpat," the spokesman added.

Three major roads in Gua Musang, Pasir Mas and the state capital are still inundated and closed to traffic, however.
