KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has lashed out at DAP's Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai for attempting to mislead the public on issue of land sale and affordable housing development in Kuala Lumpur.
Tan had reportedly claimed KL City Hall had sold 45 parcels of land without going through an open-tender process since Tengku Adnan helmed the Federal Territories Ministry.
The minister challenged Tan to make his allegations clear so that he could respond with legal action. He also urged Tan to report his claims to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if he believed there was any abuse of power.
Tengku Adnan said from the land sold, 43 were signed, with 28 plots for the construction of the Federal Territory Affordable Housing (RUMAWIP) and the rest for the development of the 1Malaysia Civil Servants Housing (PPA1M) and 1Malaysia People’s Housing (PR1MA).
“The areas sold for development involve non-feasible hawker centres' reserves, squatter settlements, public housing spaces, reserved open spaces and staff quarters.
“The selling price offered was also based on the current selling price. Some had been discounted based on the cross-subsidy concept; developers would then have to sell the house at a price of RM42,000, RM188,000, RM198,000 and RM230,000.
“The price benefits the people as they can enjoy house prices which are lower than the real market value,” he said in a statement.
Tengku Adnan said to date, the number of RUMAWIP developed now exceeded 50,000 units.
“I do not understand the purpose of YB Tan Kok Wai spreading news about the development made by the government under the Federal Territories Ministry.
“Is he not supposed to appreciate the government’s continuous effort to ensure that the underprivileged would still be able to afford their own home instead of having to stay with others or having to live out of town,” he said.
