Johor folk gears up to celebrate Johor Baru's 24th anniversary as capital city

JOHOR BARU: A three-day celebration festival to commemorate the 24th anniversary of Johor Baru as the state's capital city will be held at Dataran Bandaraya, Johor Baru starting today.

The culmination of the three day event will be on the eve of 2018 New Year night where a countdown session will be held followed by a spectacular showcase of fireworks display.

The festival dubbed Festivities@IIBD (Ibrahim International Business District) will be eventful filled with various programmes which had been broken down to three thematic programmes.

Today will feature Festivities@IIBD Food, while tomorrow will highlight Festivities@IIBD Family and Sports and on Sunday which is also the last day, the theme is Festivities@IIBD Musical.

According to the organising event manager Muhd Ridzuan, the festival is being held for the first time and is jointly organised between Johor Baru City Council and Ibrahim International Business District's Coronotion Square developer Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd.

Coronation Square is part of an on-going development project in the IIBD vicinity which comprise mix-development projects of residential and commercial properties right smack in the centre of Johor Baru city centre.

"The three day celebration is for the people of Johor to come and celebrate the momentous occassion of Johor Baru city celebrating its 24th anniversary as the capital city," he said.

Ridzuan added the event is also held as a promotional tool to inform the public on the development progress of the Coronation Square project.

"We have set about six to eight programmes for publicity purposes on the Coronation Square project starting next year," he said.

On the Festivities@IIBD, Ridzuan said among the programmes highlighted is the Batik and Night Glow Stick Fun Walk on Saturday night with 400 participants expected to join in the event.

"There will also be a food festival and a traders bazaar comprising about 55 booths through out the three-day event and we expect about 20,000 visitors to throng the event," he said.

He added there will also be a busking competition among busking groups in the city and there will be special prizes for the top three winners.

There will be a special appearance by Datuk Zainal Abidin who will also be leading the new year countdown together with Johor Baru mayor Amran A. Rahman.

The events for today and tomorrow will start at 3pm until 12am while on the last day it will start at the same time but ends at 1am.
