Parents make police reports against teachers almost every week - Deputy Home Minister

JOHOR BARU: Almost every week, there will be parents who come with lawyers to lodge police reports against teachers for disciplining students.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said most of the reports only involved minor disciplinary actions on students.

He said those cases did not even require intervention of authorities such as the police.

Among the cases were disciplinary punishments and scolding on the students as well as light stroke of the rotan which did not cause any injuries.

Jazlan said when reports were made, the police would conduct investigations even though the case was a simple issue which could be solved amicably through discussions.

“If it can be solved just by discussions, you (parents) are just wasting police’s time.

“After all, the cases are just minor ones like punishments and scolding from the teachers,” he told a press conference after opening SMK Sri Rahmat’s Parent-Teacher Association general meeting, here today.

Jazlan said although disciplinary problems were worrying, parents should not leave the full responsibility of solving their children’s problems to the teachers.

He said the situation was made worse when parents decided to take a serious action against the teachers for meting out punishments on the pupils.

“Parents now are more educated than before. So, they should know how to solve the issue amicably through consultations without involving third parties like lawyers or police.

“Cases such as these are occurring almost every week nationwide, even in Pulai, which continues to increase.

“Previously, we have never heard of parents who hire lawyers to take action against teachers for taking disciplinary action against their children,” he said.
