Welfare Department has rescued 3,040 homeless people, including 455 foreigners

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 3,040 homeless people, including 455 foreigners, have been rescued, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said they were rescued in 1,805 operations conducted by the Welfare Department (JKM).

“The operations include 249 integrated operations, 730 scheduled operations and 826 operations based on complains or are ad hoc nationwide.

“Foreigners are handed over to the Immigration Department.

“Homeless Malaysians who have no family members and below 60 are sent to Desa Bina Diri. Those aged 60 and above are sent to Rumah Seri Kenangan,” she said.

Azizah was responding to a question from Datuk Koh Nai Kwong (BN-Alor Gajah) who had asked about the ministry’s operations in urban areas and how it was dealing with beggars.
