JOHOR BARU: A newborn baby girl was found in a baby hatch at a charity home in the state capital on Sept 29.
District Social Welfare Department officer Norhafizah Ahmad said the 40-day-old infant, who is now in stable health, was found in the safe haven box at the OrphanCare Foundation.
The foundation's supervisor alerted the welfare officer after they found the infant without any garment or supporting documents in the box.
A safe haven baby box is a secure, temperature-regulated box where parents can anonymously surrender a newborn baby. The box was introduced to provide a safe alternative to abandoning newborn babies.
"The infant named Rose Amanda temporarily, appeared to have been recently born, with her umbilical cord cut, likely by the person who left her.
"No identification documents or notes were left with the infant," Norhafizah said in a press statement today.
She said the foundation supervisor lodged a police report and the girl was admitted to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for medical evaluation and has been in stable health since.
After she was given a clean health clearance she was discharged on Oct 24 and was placed in temporarily custody with the foundation.
"We are trying to trace the baby's family members to discuss her future.
Norhafizah said the department is reaching out to the public with a court-approved picture of the infant, hoping they might locate the baby's mother or relatives with the relevant information.
Anyone with information or who may be related to Rose Amanda is encouraged to contact the Children's Protector officer Nur Ainie Amera Mohd Kia at 07-2232606, 07-2232607, or 014-8419358.
