GMMF urges Israel to be held accountable over Palestine bloodshed

KUALA LUMPUR: The Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) has urged the international community to take immediate action and place pressure on holding Israel accountable for its actions, following bloodshed involving Palestinian lives on Friday.

The violence meted out by Israeli soldiers had led to the deaths of at least 16 people and 1,400 others injured in East Jerusalem.

GMMF chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Nasharudin Mat Isa, voiced out GMMF’s concerns over the issue and called for Israel to be held accountable for its actions.

“The GMMF wishes to express its concerns on the escalating tensions and killings that have took place, with latest reports stating at least 16 people have been killed by Israeli forces and approximately 1400 more injured during the Great Return March.

“The march has seen thousands of Palestinians flocking to the eastern Gaza borders to join and commemorate Palestinian Land Day (on March 30).

“We call for the Israeli occupation authorities to respect the Palestinians’ right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, in addition to the former abiding upon their obligations under human rights law,” he said in a statement.

Nasharudin said the aggression is a continuation of the ones committed by Israeli occupation forces in singling out Christian youths of Palestine who were praying and singing in the Holy City of Jerusalem, celebrating Palm Sunday, at the beginning of Holy Week, in occupied East Jerusalem.

The GMMF, he said, also called on the international community to take immediate necessary actions and put pressure in having Israel be held accountable for its violations.

Land Day is an annual commemoration of the deaths of six Arab citizens of Israel killed by Israeli security forces during demonstrations over government land confiscations in northern Israel in 1976.

Thousands of Palestinians had marched to the Gaza border at the start of a six-week protest, with the aim of asserting their right to return to towns and villages from which their families had fled, or were driven out, when the state of Israel was created.
