KUALA LUMPUR: The Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) today expressed confidence in Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s capability as the seventh prime minister of Malaysia to lead the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.
Its president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman said after becoming Prime Minister for 22 years previously, Tun M has what it takes to lead the country again.
“I am confident that Dr Mahathir will be able to lead the country based on his experience, coupled with his success in leading PH component parties to victory in the 14th General Election (GE14),” he added.
Speaking to Bernama, Abdul Aziz said all parties should accept the fact that Dr. Mahathir is prime minister once again.
Abdul Aziz also said what is important now is for PH to fulfill the promises as contained in its manifesto, especially the 10 things it hopes to achieve within the first 100 days of rule.
He also believed PH’s victory was a true manifestation of the unique democratic process in Malaysia, with the elements of racial, religious and cultural diversity.
On BN’s defeat, Abdul Aziz said it was just the normal workings of democracy.
“This is the cycle of political change. Indeed, in any government after 50 to 60 years of rule, if there is no ‘tremor or ‘renaissance’, the governing party will certainly be tested by the process of change. This process is due to the increasingly mature political journey in the country.
“BN should not be too disappointed with this defeat. It is a sign of demand for internal change in the party itself, in line with the current situation,” he commented.
Abdul Aziz also proposed that BN begin to field new faces in the party leadership to provide fresh elements, and at the same time offer the people diverse choices. – BERNAMA
