Martabak Jawa a hit at Ramadan Bazaars in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: An alternative to the calorie-loaded martabak, Martabak Jawa, is making waves at Ramadan bazaars in the state.

Normally made with beef or chicken filling, the traditional stuffed pancake offers generous fill of cabbage and is eaten with chilli sauce dip.

Checks at several bazaars revealed that business was brisk for Martabak Jawa sellers as visitors flocked to buy meals and drinks for breaking of fast.

One of the traders at Asia City bazaar, Ariyanto Harry, 30, said he was able to sell up to 300 pieces of martabak Jawa daily throughout the fasting month.

“The holy month is a much-awaited time for us as we are able to sell more compared to normal days. I would usually sell Martabak Jawa at the tamu (market) around the city.

“The response has been good and customers are willing to wait in order to buy Martabak Jawa. I learned how to make it from my brother.

“I also make chicken martabak, but it is sold only upon request,” said Ariyanto who started selling Martabak Jawa four years ago.

Martabak Jawa is sold at RM2.50 per piece, while chicken martabak is priced at RM3 each.
