RANTAU PANJANG: 'Kerbau guling' literally translates to rolling buffalo.
However, no buffaloes were harmed in the making of this delicacy from Thailand but famous amongst the locals here.
Every Ramadan, 'kerbau guling' is a sought after sweet delicacy, eaten with shaved coconut.
Also known as 'kuih hitam' or 'koleh hitam', it has a soft texture and is rolled in shaved coconut, akin to a 'buffalo taking a dip'.
For 'kerbau guling' seller, Wan Suriana Wan Ali, 35, the delicacy was introduced in Rantau Panjang by her father 31 years ago.
Today Wan Suriana is keeping her father's legacy alive by continuing to sell the sweet delicacy.
"Actually, only recently people started calling it 'kerbau guling'. Previously we just called it 'kuih hitam'.
"It became 'kerbau guling' because it is rolled in coconut and it looks like a buffalo taking a dip. It was then shared on social media and netizens started calling it 'kerbau guling'," Wan Suriana said.
After their stall went viral on social media, Wan Suriana said there has been an increase in the number of customers, especially in the month of Ramadan.
On normal days, Wan Suriana said she would sell about 10 trays of 'kerbau guling' but in the month of Ramadan, it could go as high as 50 trays a day.
Her customers were not limited to those who live in Rantau Panjang, but Wan Suriana said some came from Kota Bharu, Machang and Gua Musang just to purchase her 'kerbau guling'.
Sometimes she would even get customers from out of state thanks to the power of social media.
Still making the delicacy using her father's unique recipe, Wan Suriana said some have asked her to share the recipe but she would only give the basic, out of respect for her father's hard work.
