Man detained over Bukit Mertajam drive-by shooting

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have detained a man in connection with a drive-by shooting near Taman Sentosa, Jalan Kulim here yesterday.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said that the man, in his 40s, was detained in Tanjung Tokong at about 11.30pm yesterday.

The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.

"We have obtained a six-day remand order for the man, which ends on June 1.

"We have (also) recorded statements from the victim, his friend and the Toyota Hilux driver involved in an accident with the victim's car following the shooting.

“A total of five statements have been recorded so far," he said in a press statement today.

Twenty-three year old mobile phone seller Tan Yi Chin was shot at 11 times in the 11.15am incident.

His unidentified masked assailant opened fire through Tan's car window before fleeing from the scene in a white vehicle.

The victim sustained three gunshot wounds to his right shoulder, arm and body.

Nik said that Tan is in stable condition, but the three bullets lodged in his body have yet to be removed.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
