BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 50-year-old woman died after she fell into a six feet-deep drainage hole while hiking at Jalan Kolam Cherok Tok Kun here today.
The body of the victim identified as Oh Ai Chin was found some 5km away from where she was last seen.
A team from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue was deployed to the scene after they were alerted to the incident at 12.59pm.
Its operations commander Mohd Azmi Zakaria said with the assistance of the police, the team managed to retrieve the victim's body.
"With the help of police, we managed to retrieve the victim's remains, believed to have fallen into the drainage hole while hiking and swept away.
"We then handed the remains over to police for the next course of action," he said.
Penang has been hit by heavy rain, strong winds, and flash floods in the past three days.
