KUALA LUMPUR: A poster warning members of the public not to contribute money to a fake Tabung Harapan Malaysia account is making its rounds on social media.
The public service announcement, which carried the warning 'Beware of Scam' in a bold red text, advised Malaysians not to fall for the con trick.
The poster featured a screenshot of the fake Tabung Harapan Malaysia announcement alongside the genuine announcement with the correct Maybank account number.
It said the genuine Tabung Harapan Malaysia account number was 5660 1062 6452.
As at May 31, Tabung Harapan Malaysia has collected RM7.07 million.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng was quoted as saying yesterday that the money would be used to reduce the country's debt.
The contribution is tax-deductible for individuals and companies, and there is no limit to the tax deduction.
All money collected will be audited and will only be used to reduce the federal government's debt.
On Wednesday (May 30), the government announced the setting up Tabung Harapan Malaysia, which is geared towards providing an avenue for the public to donate to help the country’s financial situation.
The fund is to be managed by the Finance Ministry.
The Finance Minister had disclosed recently that the federal government’s actual debt and liabilities stood at RM1.087 trillion, or 80.3 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) as at December 31 last year.
