KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Bintang member of parliament Fong Kui Lun vows to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) if it is proven the Jalan Masjid India Ramadan bazaar scandal involved abuse of power.
In a statement today, he said he was disappointed with news of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) youth leader Mohd Noorhisyam Abdul Karim collecting some RM5,000 each from food stall operators at the bazaar, supposedly as ‘additional rental cost’.
Fong denied that he has received some of the money allegedly collected by Noorhisyam and his associates.
He explained that on June 5, Noorhisyam had asked him for a support letter to help traders who had failed to obtain licences from City Hall to set up stalls at the bazaar.
At the time, he said, Noorhisyam had stated that he would not take money from the traders.
Fong said he had only wanted to help the traders apply for lots at the bazaar and had issued the support letter on condition that apart from City Hall, nobody else should be collecting money from the traders.
He stressed that the traders had to get the approval of City Hall to operate at the bazaar.
Fong said he had contacted the traders and other parties involved to get further explanation and gather evidence on the matter.
He urged those with information to contact him or lodge a police report.
It has been reported that Noorhisyam has denied taking money from the Ramadan bazaar traders and is mulling lodging a police report on the matter.
