Govt commitment to Islam, Council of Elders' effectiveness to take centrestage in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: Questions over how far is the government committed to uphold Islam, as well as improvements made so far based on advice from the Council of Elders, are expected to heat up the Dewan Rakyat today.

Based on the list of questions for the Ministers Question Time (MQT)session slated for Tuesday, issues such as upholding Islam as the religion of the federation, the supply of meat for Hari Raya Aidiladha, as well as monitoring of childcare centres, could take centrestage in the August house this morning.

According to the schedule, Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-UMNO Kuala Krau) will be asking the Prime Minister to state as to how far will the government be able to guarantee that the position of Islam is preserved, based on Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution.

Dr Hasan Bahrom (PH-AMANAH Tampin) meanwhile will be asking the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister on what are the efforts taken by the government to ensure that there is enough supply of meat to tide over the upcoming Aidiladha period.

Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang) will ask the Women, Family and Community Development Minister on its measures to monitor childcare centres nationwide to ensure that tragedies such as those which befell little Adam Rayqal do not recur.

In the written answers portion of the Parliament session, the prime minister will field a question from Datuk Rozman Isli (BN-UMNO Labuan) on what advice has been imparted so far by the five members of the Council of Elders, as well as the improvements they have made to the government administration, especially with regards to the delivery system.

One question that is bound to draw attention is from Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PH-PKR Kapar), who will be asking the Human Resources Minister to state what the government plans to do if foreign companies take over local companies and refuse to hire locals.

Meanwhile, veteran politician Fong Kui Lun (PH-DAP Bukit Bintang) will be tabling a motion to suggest that the government reinstate local council elections to enable city folk to elect their own representatives within local authorities.

Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-DAP Kota Melaka) meanwhile, is set to table a motion to demand the resignations of Election Commission (EC) deputy commissioner Tan Sri Othman Mahmood as well as that of five EC members - Datuk Md Yusop Mansor, Datuk Abdul Aziz Khalidin, Sulaiman Narawi, Datuk K Bala Singam and Datuk Leo Chong Cheong.
