Art can unite the people, foster love for the country: Dr Siti Hasmah

KUALA LUMPUR: Art is a powerful form of expression that can bring the people together in expressing their love for the country said the prime minister’s wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

“Paintings unite the people because a painting showcases the feelings which the artist intends to express.

“Same goes to music... Both can be enjoyed by the people and both bring love to everyone,” she said after officiating the “Teh Tarik with The Flag” exhibition launching ceremony at the National Art Gallery here today.

In conjunction with Merdeka Day celebration, the works of 13 local artists will be showcased at the exhibition, centred on the patriotic spirit evoked by the Jalur Gemilang.

The exhibition is open to the public for one month beginning today until Sept 17.

Dr Siti Hasmah also encouraged such exhibition to be held regularly in order to instil the patriotic spirit among Malaysians. It can also be an eye-opening experience for the younger generation.

“Noble values should be taught since young so that they know how to appreciate them,” she added.

Also present at the ceremony were National Art Gallery director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Najib Ahmad and Wei-Ling Gallery director Lim Wei Ling, who is also the curator of the gallery.

Mohamed Najib said the exhibition reflects the reaction of the people towards the National day celebration.

“It is our tradition and culture. The flag itself portrays the identity of the nation and Teh Tarik is the culture that we, Malaysians, have.

“These two words are very close to the people. The public is encourage to visit the exhibition from 10am to 6pm, to see for themselves the arts expressed by the 13 local artists who are passionate about instilling the patriotic spirit in all Malaysians,” he said.
