KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is confident the Malaysian contingent bound for the Asian Para Games in Jakarta on Oct 6-13 will better their previous mark from four years ago in Incheon, South Korea.
When met at the flag handing over ceremony to the national contingent here at the Paralympic Centre of Excellence in Kampung Pandan on Monday, Wan Azizah said Malaysia can certainly improve on their previous standing, given the strength and quality possessed by the young athletes of today.
Wan Azizah was also impressed by the sacrifices put in by the national athletes, who spent more time training than with their families, just so they could do well for the country.
"With the spirit of the tiger, the sincerity to fight, backed by the support of every Malaysian and the 'Malaysia Boleh' slogan, I am confident our extraordinary athletes will rise and bring more glory to our nation.
"On behalf of the Malaysian government, I wish you all the best. Fight with all your might and aim for the stars. We (Malaysians) are behind you.
"I believe our contingent have got what it takes to bring back more gold medals from this year's edition," said Wan Azizah.
A total of 139 local athletes (110 men and 29 women) will compete in this year's edition.
Malaysia will be banking on the likes of Ridzuan Puzi (athletics), Abdul Latif Romly (athletics), Muhammad Ziyad Zokefli (athletics), Cheah Lek Hou (badminton) and Jong Yee Khie (power lifting) for titles.
Four years ago, Malaysia finished seventh with a 15-20-27 haul.
