KUALA LUMPUR: The US Department of Justice (DoJ) will seek the Thai government's assistance in issuing warrants on jewellery linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case, believed to be gifted by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, to his mother.
According to a news portal today, the jewelery comprises a pair of matching earrings and diamond rings to Jho Low’s mother , Evelyn Goh Gaik Ewe.
In a statement to a California Court dated November 2, the DoJ said the US government was still trying to locate the jewellery and assumed it was in Thailand where the owner by the name of Gaik Ewe was believed to be.
Following negotiations with the Thai government, the DOJ said it would provide a copy of the civil suit to the authorities in the country in regards to the jewellery, a notice of forfeiture, and a warrant of arrest dated June 16, 2017.
This is based on a mutual legal aid agreement (MLA) between the two countries.
The DoJ in a statement on Nov 1 said Low and another individual, Roger Ng, were charged in the Federal Court in East New York for a conspiracy to launder billions of dollars embezzled from 1MDB.
Low and Ng were also charged with conspiring to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) by paying bribes to various Malaysian and Abu Dhabi officials, the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) said in a statement.
