PUTRAJAYA: More than 2,000 participated in the Putrajaya Car-Free Day organised by the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj), here, today.
PPj president Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said the inaugural programme received good response from the local community and those from surrounding areas.
He said the programme is in line with the vision of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who wanted Persiaran Perdana, here, to emulate Champs-Élysées in Paris where the public can traverse the entire 1.9km stretch without having to worry about motorised vehicles passing through.
"Programmes like these can boost Putrajaya's image on the national and international stage as an administrative capital that is aware about global warming.
"Apart from that, it can indirectly encourage folks in Putrajaya to improve on their health.
"That is why we choose the first Sunday of the month for this car-free day initiative, which is from 7am to 5pm," he said.
Speaking to NSTP, Dr Aminuddin said various activities are in store for the public such as walking, running, cycling or Zumba dance.
The activities, according to him, goes with the event's theme which is 'Burn Fat, Not Oil'.
Other activities organised are story-telling competition for children, traditional games, performances by buskers, food trucks and lucky draw.
