ALOR STAR: Tropical storm Pabuk is forecast to batter Langkawi and portions of northern Kedah tomorrow.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the monster storm will strike the popular tourist island at 2pm on Saturday.
Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lieutenant Col (PA) Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacob said Langkawi residents and tourists are advised to steer clear of coastal areas during this time.
“High waves are forecast for tomorrow, so we are advising against all water recreational activities, fishing and sailing for the time being.
"Meanwhile, APM members will monitor the situation at four observation points, namely Chenang beach, Payar island, Pantai beach and Kuala Muda, to ensure safety,” he said when met by NSTP today.
Awang Askandar said the storm’s strong winds will be a danger to the public and many trees may be uprooted.
“As such, we advise all residents and tourists in Langkawi to stay alert, especially those located along coastal areas, as this storm is very powerful.
“Members of the public can contact the district command operations centre at 04-9663309 (Langkawi) and 04-4235682 (Kuala Muda)," he added.
