Langkawi records one-year dengue outbreak-free

LANGKAWI: Langkawi Island has remained free from dengue outbreaks for the past year, with no new cases reported up to the 40th Epidemiology Week (ME40), which ended yesterday.

Langkawi district Health Officer Dr Mansor Ismail credited this success to the consistent efforts of all stakeholders in preventing Aedes mosquito infestations.

"From Oct 6 last year until yesterday (Oct 6, 2024), it has been 365 days without a dengue outbreak report on this island. This is a remarkable achievement in our effort to combat dengue fever.

"Last year, there were eight dengue outbreaks recorded on the island, with seven outbreaks reported in 2022," he said when contacted today.

He said the achievement was made following increased awareness amongst the public following campaigns on the mainstream media platforms.

"This is also made possible with the swift action in identifying dengue fever hotspot localities based on cases reported throughout last year.

"Localities with a high number of cases or posing high risk are given immediate attention in carrying out prevention measures including elimination of Aedes mosquito breeding ground," he said.

Dr Mansor hoped that the success would enhance travellers' confidence in continuing choosing Langkawi as a preferred holiday destination.
