SEREMBAN: PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) will send a proposal to the government to install speed cameras on Penang Bridge as well as to add more cameras at several locations on six highways managed by the company.
Its managing director Datuk Azman Ismail said at present, Penang Bridge does not have any camera and the proposal is aimed at preventing accidents.
“At present, the bridge only has closed-circuit television (CCTV) to monitor the traffic flow. Hence, we propose to have speed cameras installed.
“The proposal will be handed over to the government after we receive full report on the recent crash involving an SUV which plunged into the sea.
“PLUs will only install the cameras but the monitoring will be conducted by the police and the Road Transport Department,” he said in a press conference after launching the 14th Ops Selamat in conjunction with Chinese New Year at Seremban R&R north bound here today.
Detailing further, Azman said PLUS would also review the need to reduce the speed limit and to increase the height of the barrier wall on the bridge depending on the investigation report.
He said the speed limit on the bridge is 80kph and the barrier follows the British Standard (BS 400) with the height of 1m.
In another development, Azman said fatal accident rate on the bridge recorded a 54 per cent decrease with six cases last year compared to 13 cases in 2017.
For normal accident, a total of 332 cases were recorded compared to 345 cases in the previous year.
On Sunday, NSTP reported that a white Mazda CX-F SUV driven by Moey Yun Peng, 20, plunged into the sea at KM4 of the Penang Bridge towards the mainland.
In the 2.50am incident, the SUV was involved in an accident with a Toyota Vios. Following the crash, a search and rescue operation was conducted by authorities and they managed to locate the vehicle 15m from the 34th pillar of the bridge at 4pm yesterday.
