GEORGE TOWN: Thousands of motorists were stuck in a massive crawl on the Penang Bridge here this morning.
Motorists took to social media to say that an accident worsened the situation.
The surrounding roads leading to the bridge were also heavily congested.
At 5.58am, PLUS Malaysia Bhd's @plustrafik X account posted a notification, cautioning motorists of an accident at Km7.7 of the bridge (island-bound).
It said the left and right lanes were blocked as a result.
In a follow-up post at 8am, it said only part of the left lane was still blocked.
It said the crawl stretched up to 14km and cautioned motorists to use alternative routes.
Social media was abuzz with videos and photos of the crawl.
Motorists claimed that there was an accident on the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Bridge, which also resulted in congestion.
Netizen Kift Nizamz (Maria N Nizam) said she was already at Km1.1 of the first bridge when it was still dark.
"Until the sun shines, I have yet to reach the middle span.
"The jam was so long," she said.
Another motorist, Encik Mat Ady, said when he was on the bridge at 6.15am, he saw an accident involving two cars.
He said traffic had started building up.
Nur Ruhaida Ismail said her friend was stuck in a three-hour jam.
