PUTRAJAYA: Starting from March 15, a one-kilometre stretch along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR) will only be accessible to buses including tourist buses.
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad said other vehicles, however, could no longer ply the stretch from Jalan Esfahan to the Jalan Melayu intersection.
"The existing design along the said stretch seems to give priority to pedestrians with wider pavements and a narrow road," he told reporters after a luncheon talk, here.
Also present was Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan.
Nor Hisham said input from the public gathered from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Facebook page showed that many supported the change of traffic plan.
"There are about 1,000 responses collected, with 57 per cent stating they agreed to the plan and 43 per cent against it," he added.
Khalid added that the autorities had also met the owners of premises along the affected stretch to inform them of the plan.
He said the move to close off the said road could provide a conducive site for festive bazaars including the famous Ramadan bazaar.
"We have never said that we will cancel the Ramadan bazaar as what has been reported by some media.
"We plan to relocate it to a better site that can (also) be enjoyed by tourists."
Khalid also said the ministry planned to rebrand itself to include the element of development in its name.
"We need time to do this as the ministry has to collect views from other ministries including on its impact.
"This matter will have to be brought before the Cabinet. It is not this week though."
