Suspected chemical waste found dumped in Penang oil palm plantation

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have received a report that an unidentified party has been disposing of blue drums with sacks believed to contain chemical waste at an oil palm plantation in Bukit Teh, here, since the beginning of this month.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the report was lodged by a 72-year-old man.

“The man was told by his workers about the ‘chemical waste’ and, subsequently, lodged a report with us and the Department of Environment (DOE).

“He claimed the blue drums were thrown into a hole and did not know who the culprit was,” he said.

Nik Ros Azhan added that the DOE had carried out an inspection of the site and will conduct an investigation; and that samples have been taken to ascertain the contents of the sacks.

He said police have not received any reports from nearby residents.

State Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the state government is waiting for reports on the waste material.
