BINTULU: Firefighters are working round-the-clock to contain a landfill fire at Tanjung Kidurong that started last week from spreading to neighbouring areas.
District Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohamad Meramit said his department, together with personnel from Bintulu Development Authority and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd have been battling the blaze at the one-hectare dumping.
"We decided to carry out the 24-hour operation to put out the fire after an emergency meeting held on Tuesday.
Mohamad said the operation was challenging and risky due to the wide range of materials contained within the landfill.
“The one-hectare landfill was filled with garbage, as high as 40 meters.” he said.
He added that the dry weather also caused the fire to spread quickly.
