BUKIT MERTAJAM: The 133-year-old Pek Kong Cheng Tua Pek Kong temple, located within the heart of town here, was destroyed in a fire tonight.
The fire struck about 8.40pm to the surprise of traders and customers at a nearby food court. Firefighters were rushed to the scene but by then the fire had engulfed the temple almost entirely.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they managed to control the flame by 9pm.
“We are doing our best to put out the fire,” he said.
Video footage of the raging fire has since made its way into social media.
Built in 1886, the temple is known locally as the Pek Kong Cheng Tua Pek Kong temple.
