KUANTAN: Education pull-outs from New Straits Times Press (NSTP) newspapers and workshops organised by Media Prima Bhd's (MPB) do not only prepare SK Cherating pupils for examinations but also help develop their keen interest in studies.
The school has continuously utilised NST's Newspaper-in-Education (NIE) programme and Berita Harian's pullout Didik as a teaching and learning tool for its pupils.
Headmaster Khairul Azizi Ab Aziz said the 127 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination candidates from the school have shown significant interest towards Didik which is seen as a comprehensive learning tool.
“Didik has played an important role as pupils are keen to learn more when using the newspaper during lessons. They not only read and gather information but some 40 per cent of the questions in Didik is similar to the ones prepared in school.
“The newspaper is helping the school achieve 100 per cent pass rate in examinations. Recently more than 52 per cent of the students recorded passes in their UPSR trial examination,” he said when met during BH Didik’s examination seminar at the school today.
He said without relying solely on class lessons, the presence of educators from outside also help students to be well-prepared for the examination.
“The programme today allows students to meet teachers who are experts in certain subjects and this gives them a chance to gain new knowledge compared to the normal lessons taught in school.
“I realised that this programme emphasises studying technique and information sharing among their peers. In urban areas, students can access their own information (through the internet) compared to pupils in rural areas who mostly depend on their teachers,” he said.
The three-day programme which ends tomorrow (Sunday) also invited health experts Dr Pameila Renna from Pantai Hospital Ampang to speak about health awareness including educating and promoting hygiene awareness among the pupils.
Since MPB adopted the school under the Pintar programme in 2016, a series of education seminars, motivation programmes and learning aids have been organised for the pupils.
