KL mayor wants to meet PPR elevator maintenance contractors tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will call 11 elevator maintenance contractors involved in 45 public housing projects (PPR) in the nation's capital to check on the condition of its elevators.

KL mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said the discussion will take place tomorrow to avoid a repeat of an incident that took place at the Kerinchi PPR flats today.

"I was shocked by what happened today, as a result of that, I have directed for an immediate meeting with 11 PPR elevator maintenance contractors to go over the current procedures.

"We will not compromise in things like these and we will conduct an investigation immediately," he said when met after conducting checks at the Kerinchi PPR flats, here, today.

Nor Hisham said the city hall would bear the cost of treatment for the victims who were injured in today's incident.

At about 2.30pm today, an elevator car at one of the block's of the Kerinchi PPR flats malfunctioned and crashed from the fifth floor to the ground, with nine people inside.

"We will review closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage during the incident and the maintenance log."

He reiterated that DBKL did not want to see a repeat of the incident as it involved people's lives.

"Things like these can happen suddenly and there must be a reason behind it, whether it's the maintenance or the elevators are too old," he said.
